## Article

The Port of Rotterdam is the largest seaport in Europe and one of the busiest in the world by cargo tonnage. It sits at the mouth of the Rhine–Meuse delta on the North Sea, giving it direct access to the Rhine’s inland waterway network and, through it, to the industrial heartlands of Germany, Belgium, and France.

## Layout and function

The port stretches roughly 40 km from the historic city center to the Maasvlakte, a largely artificial extension built into the North Sea to accommodate the largest container and bulk vessels afloat. It handles a wide mix of trade: deep-sea container terminals, one of Europe’s largest petrochemical and refining clusters, dry and liquid bulk terminals, and extensive logistics and distribution space.

## Role in European trade

Rotterdam’s position at the Rhine’s mouth makes it the principal gateway port for a large share of northwest European imports and exports, competing with Antwerp and Hamburg for container volumes while holding a dominant position in bulk liquids and petrochemicals. It is governed and operated by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, a public body jointly owned by the city and the Dutch state.
