Port of Shanghai

PortsLast updated: 29 August 2026

The Port of Shanghai has been the world’s busiest container port by throughput since 2010, handling tens of millions of TEU a year across several terminal areas along the Yangtze River estuary and the East China Sea coast.

Yangshan deepwater port

Much of the port’s deep-sea container capacity is concentrated at Yangshan, an artificial deepwater terminal built on islands roughly 30 km offshore and connected to the mainland by the Donghai Bridge. Yangshan was built specifically because the river-mouth berths nearer the city could not accommodate the largest modern containerships at full draft.

Gateway to the Yangtze delta

Shanghai serves as the principal maritime gateway for the Yangtze River Delta, one of the world’s most concentrated manufacturing and export regions, and connects to an extensive river-barge network reaching far into China’s interior. The port is operated by the state-owned Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).
