Container ship

By Admirals Atlas editorial team · Last updated: 22 September 2026

A container ship carries freight in standardized containers, secured in cells below deck and often in stacks above deck. Containers allow cargo to move between ship, truck, and rail without unpacking it at each transfer.

Capacity is commonly expressed in TEU, or twenty-foot equivalent units. That measure describes container slots, not the exact number of boxes aboard: a forty-foot container normally counts as two TEU. A container/ro-ro cargo ship has separate space for wheeled cargo as well as containers.
